Hi all,
I would like to control my new Pioneer Plasma (PDP 502 MX) with the IRF-6 module. Is the CM-232i compatible with the remote control "hard-wired" input on the display? If so, how do you lengthen the control cable and adapt the DB9 connector to the input port on the display (mini-plug)?
Thanks
Ralph

I know this is possible. The Runco 50" plasma is just a Pioneer that has been painted different. It is just three pins. I know that the pinout is in the runco manual but I don't have one. Did the Pioneer manual not have that info? You won't have any difficulty at all controlling the display with the IRF-6. However discrete IR commands are just as reliable in good installs and I believe are available for that unit, and saves you the money for the CM-232i.

Thanks for your reply. The manual describes the control cable as a monaural cable with mini plugs (no resistance). The manual describe "control devices that are compatible with the "SR" logo mark" but does not go into any further depth.
There is an RSC232c input. In the index it is described as D-sub 9 pin combination in/out mini DIN 6pin (x2)and is a control plug. This would probably accept the plug directly however another section of the manual states: "DO NOT MAKE ANY CONNECTIONS TO THIS TERMINAL. This terminal is used in the factory setup." Which makes me concerned about using it.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks again,
Ralph

If you can get the RS-232 commands for the Display I personally would not hesitate to make the connection. I think what their manual means by "Do Not Make Any Connection" is for some yahoo to plug something in and start tweaking with stuff he doesn't understand. I am a custom installer so I personally ignor all of those types of warnings. I stand by my previous recomendation though. I believe there is a full set of discrete commands available for that set. Which means that an IR setup is going to be the cheapest route to what you are looking for. If you whant to see something cool that I built for one of these sets check out this link. [Link: microcosman.com]It is a QuickTime file so you may have to download the plugin but it's worth it.

Enjoyed the website - Pretty impressive - Nice work!!
I will consider the IR option. I thought I'd need RF for the rest of my system as its in cabinetry on the opposite side of the room as the screen. I guess I could use a IR transmitter device saving the cost of all modules and IRF-6. I'll rethink my options.
Any suggestions on places to finde the RF command sequences?
Appreciate your good advice.

What do you mean by RF command sequences? What I would do is put the RF module in your cabinet with your equip. then run a two conductor cable to your Display that just "extends" an IR emitter. Do that by just splicing into the emmiter cable. Then you change the default output of the RTI to RF. Voila!

Thanks Matt,
My use of words may be uneducated - sorry :-). I was referring to the "brand specific" remote codes that are transmitted to the display. These would be "discrete" off - on codes rather than the toggle off/on code. I'm looking for a source of these codes.
I assume from what you are saying that an emitter can be connected directly to the IRF-6 output ports via my existing 2 conducter hard wiring. The RTI(T2) output is via RF to the the IRF-6 which forwards to the correct output port via a "hard wired" connection to an IR emitter on my display?

If you want to use the CM232, the RS232 codes should be in the manual that came with the plasma. I controlled a 503 with the following strings:
Power ON : \d002\d000\\PON\d003 Input 3: \d002\d000\\IN3\d003 Power OFF : \d002\d000\POF\d003
with a baud rate of 4800.

You are right in your asumtion. I believe you can control that display with the Pioneer TV discrete commands. Let me know if that does not work.

My suggestion would be to skip the 232 unless there is something special only in the serial config of the pioneer. Go IR, the plasmas respond to Pro projection discreet commands and if you don't want to stick the emitter on the front for cosmetic reasons try one of the following :
1. If you have other Pioneer equipment in the system (ie a dvd or receiver) put the emitter on that and use the SR out of that to the SR in on the pioneer.
2. Use the Xantech SR adapter. Run a mini plug from the IRF6 to the adapter and another out of the adapter to the SR in jack of the pioneer.
Good Luck
