I'm using an XP-8 via a relay trigger which is wired directly to the garage door motor. I monitor it via a overhead garage door contact closure connect to a Sense input on the XP-8. This provides me status and feed back to my RK1-4 that now shows red when the door is open. 2-way on the RK1-4 is working great.

I am using the Relay also. I have yet to put a sensor in. I have been busy, its for my own house. Work always gets in the way. I would like to have the word "Open" visibal when the door is open and not visiable when closed. I have this for the Ipod Icon with the Iport when the ipod is docked and its works great. When the ipod is docked you see theIpod icon on audio selection and not visisble when its not docked. Not sure how to do it for the word open.

Would love to do this in my house, but I am not too familiar with how this works. HOw do I now if it can be done with my Genie garage door kit?

My kids leave the garage open all the time, and with the summer coming I would like to insure it get's shut as often as possible.

Thanks,
Bell

You don't actually do it with the type of garage door but with a security contact on the door itself. That contact is hooked up to a XP8 sensing port. The port senses if the garage door is open or closed. If sense port 1 is not true set flag 100 for garage door open. Then any two-way device can check the state of the flag and display the appropriate color as rtiuser mentioned, any variable text, or visable button state.

We've tried this and had a nightmare of a time with it but others have not reported any issues.

But what is needed to control the garage door reliablly? I understand you using the contact closure to check for the status, but what equipment do you need (including the actual hardware) to open and close the garage door(s)?

Not sure of the model number or who even makes it but it's a garage door contact that screws directly to the garage door track. I'm sure someone on here will know the manufacture and model number. I usually call my security rep and tell him I need the garage door contact and he sends me out one.

Wire.

Go from an XP8 relay to the wall button in the garage. Wire it in parallel at the wall button with the wire coming from the motor. Then set your relay closure for .5 seconds in the macro of whatever button you want to control it with. If you want a discrete up/down macro, do a status test on the contact attached to the door, ie: discrete close-"if sense input 3 is open, close relay 3 for .5 seconds, else nothing".

I would caution you though about having it shut unattended as you may have personal or property damage. Yes the doors will stop if obstructed, but it takes some force for the motor to sense it if the photobeam doesn't stop it. I may be wrong, but I think the national building code specs that you must have a visual of the door from the trigger location.

At the moment I use the overhang door contacts connecting to Lutron RA Chronos and programmed to close at 9:00 pm if it senses garage doors are still open.  Also it will close door at Goodnight and Last out scene on RA Visor remote.

Have not have time to program to RTI XP-8/RTI T3v yet.  Kinda wanting to do it on RA2 thought.
