Just looking for some tech advice here... It is my understanding component is capable of 1080p resolution, but almost all mfg do not use the component outputs for 1080p. Is that correct?
Are the studios the driving force wanting to go HDMI for copy protection?

wrong forum, but yes. component can do 1080p without issue. However, Most set top boxes won't allow you to do 1080p over compoenet for copy protection / fears.
