i'm spec'ing a job with a bunch of T4s and T3Vs, customer likes the idea of having feedback from Ipod and XM (FP1 and Marantz XM receiver), question is should I stick to the reliable 433/WiFI or use zigbee, which from what i've been reading here, is not the greatest, especially the wake up time. WiFi in the house is super strong and reliable, i recently installed a luxul 1 watt booster and signal is full everywhere! Also what's is the normal reconnect time after sleep for the wifi versus zigbbe?

Wifi wakeup time is MUCH longer than Zigbee.  Think 10-15 seconds or so.

ZB is quick, but range is short. Wifi is suppose to connect in 5-6 seconds but usually takes more like 30-90 seconds- worthless for 2 way.

tech support guy claims his setup takes 1-2 sec for the WiFi to wake up..obviously it has to do with router used, what gives?

Zigbee, if setup properly, will connect in less than 5 seconds and has similar range as an RM433.

I've done it, it works!

The only advantage of using WiFi is cover art.

Our T4 is a good 10-15 seconds when connecting to either a Linksys WAP or a Pakedge WAP-W3.  IP is set to static.

On a job using Zigbee. Doing proper setup of the Zigbee antennas is a MUST.

Populating a list of all songs on an iPod takes a while, but I am going to recommend to the customer that he just set up playlists on a computer and then transfer those to the iPod as that will be quite a bit quicker.

Occasionally I get a delay of some sort or another in corners of the house, but it's pretty easy to just wait a second or two for the remote to connect.

One thing though, Zigbee has big problems communicating from indoors to outdoors. I think you'd either need a zigbee antenna outdoors, or a 433 for any outdoor remotes.

If it's a 433Mhz T3V that you're thinking of using, don't waste your time. The built in wireless card is pathetic, it will cost you more time and money than you can ever imagine.
Stick to Zigbee for a T3V, the T4 should work fine if you're using wireless, only thing is, it means you will need 2 antennas, may be best to use Zigbee on both. It is possible to get high gain antennas for Zigbee and they work well.

thanks guys..on the wifi thing..i have netgear pro router and AP, the big difference is i have a 1 watt Luxul booster, it gives me a 3 second reconnect time, and a 30ft range, good enough my biggest problem with zigbee is their wake up time...and i know the customer won't be using 2way as much as he'll be using one way, so i'm sticking to 433/wifi..i'll post more results later..

generally T4 is working pretty damn well, i'm using pakedge with a 1 Watt luxul booster with 2 antennaes and an in-celiling pakedge AP in the master bedroom for best coverage, names both APs exactly the same and the roaming is phenomenal, i'm very impressed, when moving away from AP1 (w/ booster) and entering the master, the T4 loses connection for literally a second and is right back on every single time! The T3 is also working really well, only difference is the wake-up time is slightly slower, but not a big deal maybe 3-4 sec rather than 2-3 on the T4. The key here is to use pakedge W3 or in-celiling version, they are the best for reconnect times and reliability, along with a decent PRO router (i'm using Netgear Pro. I have used C4 a lot and their zigbee stuff, but WiFi when done properly works a lot better with RTI, so i'm not willing to risk zigbbee with RTI...just based on my bad zigbee experiences in the past and WiFi conflicts, etc, etc..If you already have a strong WiFI in the house, i'd strongly recommend using and not introducing another frequency too close, you'd be asking for trouble

I think i was lied too ! rti told me wifi couldn't do everything zigbee could. Wifi could only do weather and ipod . I would rather do 433 if i could because then I could use a few urc dimmer in the room. Is wifi do everything zigbee does ?

I am using WIFI and with the right router, the wake up time can be 3-4 seconds (T4's and XP-8's)

after testing a lot of routers, the D Link DIR-655 gives me the 3-4 second wake up time

even the Apple Airport Extreme takes 10-15 seconds

With the right router, WIFI works fine

Will a t3v 433 model work with the XP8? The XP8 can accept both 433 and Z, correct?
