I did that with no issues: did not lose any files

but you will need to install a new email program for 7: I had installed Win Live mail on the PC before the upgrade: I reinstalled it on 7 after the upgrade and everything was in place

be sure to do a disc cleanup and remove any old or unused programs first, and run the compatibility checker to see what programs are listed as possibly giving you issues

It is better to do a clean install if you can though
