Is there anyway to to setup remote access to update a file a clients XP8.

XP8 Remote access, VPN access, whatever, any ideas?

If VPN, please help.

VPN would be simplest to use (once it's set up).  Setting up VPN is another whole thread and depends on your network gear, but once you are connected just make sure you know the static IP address of your XP-8.  I've had trouble where ID didn't see the XP-8 (in the list where you select Use USB/Use MAC address/Use specific IP address).  But, I could send the program without a problem by using the specific IP address of the unit.

I've done it. However, you will need to be careful that your changes in programmimg don't require a update to handhelds.

Hardcode your XP8 (and all other network gear for that matter), and VPN in.

I use a Linksys RV016 VPN router at the clients house. Costs about $500. Set up a free DynDns account for them unless you have a static WAN address from the isp.

Make sure you have a solid broadband connection on both ends.

If you use the Linksys RV series, I can walk you though it, it's real easy.

Use a small cheap PC (like fit-pc.com), with ID on it, and Logmein . Works a treat, and gets around all the firewall/IP issues.

interesting idea. Do you lock it up with your own login so that the clients do get access to the software?

I'm thinking I want to setup the VPN. We used a Netgear FVS318 and I have a Cisco Small Business RVS4000 and my home, so I think I'll try to get mine working first.

We have used rack mounted computers (and the occasional cheap one) with password protection and as mentioned above Hamachi - logmein and been able to update lots of installed systems.
I bet with the acer Revo at $300 or less it could be a great inexpensive solution.

This technically isn't a computer that the client should ever really need to touch.
We log in without anyone having to do anything on site. In fact the only time we have had issues is when the client or other family member chose to touch the computer.

No you don't.  The logmein service starts at startup.  With Logmein Free you just enter a valid User and Password for the computer you're logging in to.  So as long as you have a user account on the PC, you can get in.

I use it regularly to get into 2 PCs and a mac and I never have to do anything at the host computer...  I think you're thinking of something else.
