using this box in a fios setup...does anyone know of discretes or a work around for this?

I worked with an older Motorola box and found that "info" would work.
If powered on, info just brought up the info about the program. If powered off, info would bring up a screen with details about the input signal.
Try it and see if it works with the box you are working on.
Using this with the toggle power button and I am sure you should be able to figure out a work around for on / off.

Put a 12v power supply in the outlet on the back, make it switched, and power sense.
If you don't want to do that:
Power on: Menu 2 second delay Exit
Power off: Menu 2 second delay Power toggle

The menu button acts as a discrete on command.
