setting up a job with a niles ZR6 and VS6. Is there any way to control the ZR6 without using the keypads. I want to be able to control all zones with a t2cs out of the ZR6 using the RS232 into RP6. Anyone have any input? Thanks!

The keypads act as the IR sensors for the system and are routed accordingly. There may be a "hack" for using IR sensors in each zone, if you can find out which of the Cat5 wires are used for IR. If you connect them to the ZR-6 accordingly, theoretically, it should work.

Thank you,

Didnt we just create the 232 file for this??

Seems like if you are going to control it with RTI and 232 the codes should cover it. Y ou will lose the feedback as far as Ipod and tuner. There will be no feedback for volume control either

It should work without the KPs in place..I havent done a ZR-6 yet..Its still on our shelf waiting for the painter to finish up so we can get in..But we arent controlling 232 either...Using the Solo KPs and a couple of TS-Pro's
There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

Yes you can use a ZR-6 and VS-6 without the Niles keypads. I have done it twice already. The first one was 2 ZR-6s and 2 VS-6s are controlled by and XP-8 with RS232. The user can use one of the five T2-C floating remotes to choose any zone they are in, or some rooms have an RK3 also.

I am currently finishing a smaller install with one ZR-6 and one T2-B/RP-1 for control.

i was able to use the VS6 with the RS 232 codes, but the ZR6 wouldnt work over rs 232 so i just ran it through the global IR Out which worked perfect the first time around. I dont know why but job is complete and customer is happy. thanks again for the help though.

The ZR6 requires a 3.5mm TRS plug for RS232. I think tip is Rx and ring is Tx and sleeve is ground. Check the manual to confirm the pinout, it works well. I am waiting for a 2-way driver from RTI for the ZR6/VS6.

Greetings;
Old thread but maybe y'all can help. I rescued a ZR-6 from scrap pile and found a Solo-6md pad and unit functional on any single zone. Soft. ver. 3.26.
Q? xp and rs-232 extinct in my stuff and wondering if I can work around to enable all 6 or any zone via the Cat5 cable? Told by niles will burn out remote if I route together. but wondering if I can excite to turn on zones?
--- flip is if you have/know source for any keypads avail. aside from common internet retail?
Thanks.
