how do i make a transparent button the size of the background ?

Draw a button from top left corner to bottom right corner. Remove "Fill" and "Line". You could also make a transparent PNG with Photoshop.

Not sure what you're trying to do, but you could take the image file from the background (in Windows, not talking about withing ID) and save a duplicate copy but without the ^#BGCENTER at the end of the file name.  Then when you drag it onto the remote it will fill up the screen but it will have the properties of a button.

You could either make the background a button, or create a transparent .png the size of the remote.

If you are currently using Mspaint, I would suggest moving up to something a bit more geared to image creation, like GIMP (free), or the big programs like Fireworks or Photoshop (which have free trials to see if you like them).

im actually using pixelmator on the mac,
great app!

i just drew a button and made it transparent . . worked like a charm.
