I know there are a few threads about this but the info is scattered.

I would appreciate anyone with experience on this to provide and tips and best practices. It looks easy enough and could easily replace the FP-1 when using K4's. At least until 2 way.

Is the screen big enough?

Cheapest or most reliable way to get composite video?

Any negatives?

there is a software hack. That would be the cheapest. But requires hacking your appletv.

You could use the component video output, then use a receiver to down-convert it to S-video or composit. Personally, I'd use S-vid, it looks soo much better, especially if you don't need all 4 video inputs.

cheapest solution but can't pass the component output.

audio authority has this solution. Can pass through Component. probably a better solution if you are a dealer.

I think this is a very cool solution. I just wish the K4 was about $500 cheaper but that is another thread.

also too. You could just use the green (Y) output and it would not be in color.

Regarding programming:

I am still trying to decide on the Apple TV or the Escient FP1 to use on a K4 and in a theater.

I understand with the ATV that I will have to use the AA piece to convert the video and mantain the component.

I spoke with RTI today and they confirmed that 7.0 is available on Friday! They also informed me that neither option of what I am trying to do is viable.

Basically, I have an idea for a program where all room volume and source icons are ALWAYS available at the top of the screen in a "frame" taking up about 1.5 inches of the top of the K4. I dont want to deviate from this for ANY source. I want to use either the K4 or ATV as a media source.

The ATV window might be too small to read if I used buttons adjacent to the window object and maintained the top frame.

The FP1 using the old control object is clunky and not very intuitive.

According to RTI today, the new 2way screen for the FP1 will require the entire screen. This eliminates my original design.

Autonomics hasnt launched their ATV solution yet.

RTI says a 2 way solution for ATV is in the works as well as the ability to overlay buttons on a video feed.

So basically I have to stall the project until something becomes available. I dont want to install and program the old Escient object and then have RTI release the new ATV options after.

Any suggestions?

How would a 70% or so window (4.5 inches) show an Apple TV? This would leave room for control buttons on the side and maintain the top frame. But would it be too small to view/control?

Also, can you use the AA piece and maintain 720p to the component display and allow the converter to handle the 480i downscale to the ATV ONLY?

It's not too small. Done it with Crestron 6L's as well. You're an RTI dealer so you probably have a K4 sitting around, head on down to the apple store and shell out the 250 and try it yourself if you don't trust me.

Regarding the conversion we take component out of ATV into a 1x2 component DA, one output goes into composite downconverter the other into the component video distribution. Done. Works perfect.

Awesome!

I have an Apple TV in stock and 2 K4s. I will just create a starter file with the appropriate window size and use the Y feed into composite for now. If I want to get crazy, I may even "y" the component first to run to my 1080p Sammy and check resolutions stuff.

Is it a sign that I am a complete dork if I am getting butterflies in my stomach thinking about doing this tonight?

Yes it is. This coming from a guy who just a few weeks ago brought home a Panasonic hybrid phone system, setup the unit and 2 extensions along with his laptop on the kitchen bar just so he could play with it some more at home.

Sooo...how'd the test K4 go?
