Thanks for the review, Daniel! Very informative.

You've confirmed the impression I had after playing around with the T2 software, namely that the T2 would probably suit me and other frequent users of my setup better than the Pronto does, but wouldn't be as easy to make newcomer-friendly (prompts, multi-level menus, etc.)

Out of curiosity, did you try using the cursor controls as transport buttons? When I was playing around with the T2 software making a device for the TiVo, I tried setting it up so that tapping the left/right buttons would send rewind/FF codes, and holding them down for half a second would send the cursor pad codes. Seemed to work reasonably well in the simulator, but that's a far cry from actually trying it for real.

I should clarify that question: I'm specifically wondering how reliably the "hold a button down to change what it does" feature works in a real-world setting, for example what the cutoff time has to be to prevent taps from turning into presses by accident.

Yes, something like that would probably work -- however it isn't intuitive to users that don't know how your system is configured. While the remote can have mountains of hidden features like these for the "base" user, it should also be configured to be plain & simple for everyone else. There's a lot of flexibility.

Steve -- that's a pretty subjective question. I'm sure the remote is 100% reliable in timing how long you press a button -- so it all depends on well the user operates it. Think of this: one of the hardest things for "non-technical" users to master is the mouse, and especially the "double-click". Too short, too long, clicking while moving... there's a lot of play, and even a PC can guess wrong at what they're trying to do.

For a remote, if I were the only one using it I'd probably load my config up with double-clicks, press or holds commands etc. But when that newbie factor comes in... I may not want too much in sensitive spots.

Daniel brings up a good point (as well as an excellent review). In my initial design I started out with lots of hidden long press and double-click commands, but quickly backed out of too extensive a use. I still have some, but more restrictive than originally I was planning.

I'm thinking of putting a long-press macro under the Mute as a panic button that will pause every device that's pausable, for those phone call interruptus moments where the mute would let the source continue running.

Others are the use of long-press for slow or normal for fast, and combining cursor and transport on the menu hard buttons. The key is to be uniform throughout the devices, which can be a compromise.

I just wish I had something with which to try these things out on :-(.

Again, great review, Daniel!

Daniel,

I liked your review a lot. Great Job again!
You didn't mention as loudly as I would the difference in programming IR codes. I find RTI's IR Library Manager much faster than the ProntoEdit method of learning codes.

There's a lot of pre-setup for the IR Library, but as mentioned the actual learning process is fantastic. About the only niggle I had was some problems learning my receiver's codes -- about 10 of them strangely ended up as "pulse", while another 10 or so wouldn't work at all (about a third of those would work if I held the button down for three seconds). I tried a different learning process - no go. Tried learning from another remote and they finally worked. Only had this with my receiver through!

The whole software package really is refined -- it's a pleasure to work with (but as always there's a few things that could be optimized over time).

Great review, Daniel!

One suggestion-could you please list the RTI URL in some conspicuous place? I can't seem to find it.

Thanks,
