Has anybody here successfully used serial with the sonance ipod iport dock?

I have, but not with an RTI remote. I've used the IW-4 docks with AMX systems without issue. Not sure why you would bother if you're controlling them with an RTI, since the remote isn't 2-way capable anyway. Just use the IW-3 and control it via IR, you're only using 1-way control anyway and you'll save money. The only reason I see to do RS-232 is to get the metadata off the iPod. If you're using a table top version, the FS-3 gets you all the balanced audio, long distance IR control, and it has a video output that you can put up on a TV or something if you want so you can see what's going on that way. You have to get up to the IW-5 to get video out of the in-wall versions.

The reason is, there are more control functions via RS-232 than with IR, I am also tired of the poor IR reliability of the iPort, I am not worried about the meta data with this device.
