I have gone through three T2-C units in the past 4 months. Each one works fine for a few weeks, then the screen will lockup and not allow the selection of any soft button. The hard buttons all work fine. I cannot get to the diagnostic screen. Rebooting the unit does not help. Removing the battery and reinstalling it does not help. Reloading the software is impossible because the unit is not recognized as being attached to the pc. RTI has been great about giving me an RA and replacing the unit but I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas about what is causing the problem to recur. I can't believe it's random unless I am the unluckiest person in the Western Hemisphere.

My process (perhaps not applicable in your situation) for troublesome remotes/systems...

Save File.
Update/reload firmware.
Reload.
Reboot after reload.
If problems still exist then RA

Granted I do more T3s than T2Cs but I find this solves some problems. I have only had to return three remotes in 4 years.

I have had the same problems and have come up with these reasons for them happening.

1. Rti 's quality control dept. has gotten overwhelmed as of the last 6 months due to the incresed popularity of the T2-C and thus quality has gone down.

2.In my situation, static from my carpet as well as my microfiber couches has cause the lcd to fry. I now have to "discharge"myself before picking up the remote. I have actualy seen the remote fry upon picking it up and getting shocked. I also saw my cat do the same thing by touching the remote. Seems I cant train the cats to discharge themselves.
Don't read my answer. Someone else will go into great detail as to why I am wrong rather than answer the original question...

I also suspect battery quality issues.

I'm curious to whether you have changed out the charger everytime or did you just swap the remote for a new one and leave the charger there?

The first time, just the remote, the second time, both, the third time, they are saying just the remote.

i dont do as many t2cs either but i have only had one go bad and that was the first one i got. about 3 days after my local A**D got the first batch. it died within 2 weeks.

The thing i have noticed is that the chargers seem to get less reliable over time. ive had a few complaints from the first t2c installs that customers now have to fiddle with the remote to get it to sit right and charge.

Both of the charger bases I've had have required a lot of fiddling to get the connection. If you gently place the remote in the cradle, it will not connect. You have to drop it in from about an inch above. Quite often you have to wiggle it around for 10-20 seconds to get the connection.

That may be the rub right there.

I used to have many Pronto's lock up on clients before they learned to place/remove the remote from the base correctly. That moment of fiddle is wrought with intermittent connections and opportunity for static discharge.

I also have noticed that I have fewer (RTI) issues in both the short and long term if I do not load the remotes in a static prone environment (fabric couch, carpet, etc...) I always try to set up at a bar or counter to do this.

Sounds like Voodoo unfortunately, however, many people here have suspected static as a real problem.

Thanks to everyone who responded here. It appears that static electricity is the leading candidate for the culprit here. When I get my new replacement I will set the charger up in a non-carpeted area. Thanks again, for taking the time to help me out.

Update:

Just thought I would mention that RCI says that there is no way that static electricity can cause this screen to lock up. I still haven't received my RA replacement but intend to assume static is the culprit.

I've also noticed that the T2C's now come with 10 digit serial numbers, not 9 like the first T2C's. Maybe there was an internal change...just a thought.
