OK, I've been doing RTI for a couple years and I am going back to a big job I did last year to add a few little details.

The theater has a JVC Projector with the included DVDO video processor/scaler (DLA-HD10KS-DVO) and the power on and off IR commands are not hitting 100% to the projector itself. So I am adding RS232 to the projector for more reliable operation.

Control is T3/RP6 all IR to the rack with (5) DTV H20, (1) Motorolla cable Box/DVR, Sony mega changer, Yamaha RXV-2700, DVDO processor, Panamax 5300EX.

Any tips?

Hook it up and review the documentation.

If there is some distance to the projector use DB9 to RJ45 adapters and CAT5 to extend. The adapters will allow you to select the pin configuration as you see fit so there is no need to also use a null adapter if needed.

...common perception is that 232 is somehow complicated or difficult. it is actually quite simple and frankly easier than understanding IR (you just can't bypass the details by using a learner like you can with IR).

Approx. 30ft from rack to projector, I have a 22/4 ran for control (currently IR), I can pull wire if needed. How many conductors does RS232 require? Do I just extend the RTI CM232?

For basic 232:

send data
receive data
ground

with RTI:

RTI processors send data on pin 3. One way systems do not receive data sent from devices to be controlled.

Check documentation on your device for pin configuration.

If you device recieves on pin 3 then you will use a straight cable/adapter. If it receives on pin 2 you will require a null cable/adapter.

pin 5 is often ground.

They have male and female versions. No need for straight and null versions as well because you can set the pins and create what you need.

Before I started to understand Rs-232 I was quite frankly scared of it. That sounds silly but I did not understand it and assumed that the programers that did were just smarter than me. Once I forced myself to learn it, I felt foulish because of how easy I picked it up.There are still some that give me a hard time, but I relate it to learning new software. You know what it is suppose to do, you just have to figure out how to make it do it.

A great way to get started is read the documents and get examples. From most examples you can figue out the syntex of the protacol and change the things you need.

As far as the JVC projector, I beleive they have the Hex strings in there for there Rs-232.

Hex strings are different from Hex code in ir. That took me a minute to wrap my head around.
Don't read my answer. Someone else will go into great detail as to why I am wrong rather than answer the original question...
