Trying to compare these units. The only big difference is a built in HD and CD player on the SE-80 that I can see. Since most of the music is already ripped to a server, there isn't that much of a difference. Both units have an Ethernet port, but the escient site only lists the ZP-1 with TCP/IP control. Would this limit the SE-80 for use with the RTI Fireball control?? Any other thoughts between the two with respect to RTI?? Thanks!

The SE-80 is considered a standalone unit that is more of an entry level unit in comparison to the other servers. While both units can be used as a client, the ZP-1 can't work on its own without seperate unit.

As far as the control question, the SE-80 can be used with the web interface control. This is the resized interface that fits nicely on the RK3.

There is a tech bulletin about both types and models supported on RTI's site in the dealer section.

Another thing about the ZP1 is that it does not have a hard drive to store information. It will not display cover art without at least an SE80.

So the ZP1 couldn't use Fireball PC as it's source for info vs. a SE80 or the like?

From the Escient website FAQ:

Q. What are the minimum requirements?
A.
1. The Free FireBall-PC Software (of course!)
2. A FireBall Media Manager (E2, DVDM, SE, MP-150, MP-200, or E series upgraded to an E2).
3. A computer running Windows XP or Mac OS X 10.4 (or later)
4. 20MB of free hard drive space
5. A home network connecting your FireBall Media Manager and your computer running FireBall-PC

FP-1 and ZP-1 are excluded from #2

Thanks. I did some more reasearch, and the SE-80 looks like a good way to go with an RTI setup. For $699...is there anything else in the price range even close? Would be paired with an Extron component matrix and Sonance 6 zone audio system.

One last Escient question....I see they list PCM as a supported file type for the SE-80..but not listed as supported by Fireball-PC. I assume they mean .wav files by PCM. Any idea if they are supported by the SE-80 and/or Fireball PC. I have several cd's ripped as .wav's...so I was wondering.

You may want to check your pricelist if this is a bid you are putting together. IIRC the SE-80 is $999.
