Always? Suddenly? That is crucial to answering this. I've gotta say, just yesterday I was kidding with a customer of seven years, after she told me what was wrong, that one of the key things to figuring out what's going on in a customer's house is to NOT BELIEVE THE CLIENT, especially if they tell you exactly what needs to be fixed, replaced, adjusted, etc, unless that work takes about ten seconds. Often they'll misreport only because they're not qualified to conclude what is needed.
So...
you should ask the client if the remote always did that, or suddenly started; what lighting or other electrical changes, no matter how slight or in what room, happened just before it started, etc.
Meanwhile, there WAS an issue about 18 months ago with the IR window. The Asian manufacturer found a plastic for the IR window that was the same color as the IR window but was less expensive, and they built a bunch of T2+s with that plastic. Problem is, it was the same color to you and me, but to IR it was way darker than the original plastic, so RTI had a bunch of T2+ remotes with about a five foot range. RTI has replacement windows still.

Believe the client? I wouldn't believe my own mother! - the problem is happenning right out of the box, so it must be bad IR lens? Great information Ernie, very helpful. Thanks On January 20, 2008 at 01:27, Ernie Bornn-Gilman said...

Take the remote to another room or other location altogether and program it to control some other single piece of gear, if it works OK, you problem is IR contamination from some other source in the problem room.

Took the remote apart, with the black lense off, the twin IR bulbs seem to be able to turn on/off the power of my TV as a test. With the black plastic shield on, the signal is not strong enough to make it through the darkened screen. RF works perfectly. Going to seel for parts, shame, it's brand new, but I had it in the box for over a year before I took it out. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Just one minor tidbit left out.....Ernie and most of us love even the most trivial detail in posts, it's usually that detail that solves the case. Just like customers to say, after much grief over the phone, and then doing a service call to the premise, "Oh, by the way I forgot to tell you about............" At least this one is solved.

At least this one is solved. Actually, I had ruled out battery depletion - like I said everything worked perfectly. Why would the IR not function properly without the shield because the unit had been off? Okay smart A_ _ , if that's the case what's the fix? A new battery?

I actually get accused of that often, however in this case you said the remote works perfect without the IR lens cover at the end of the remote. So cased closed, either leave it off or get a replacement one from ASS*&D(definitely sarcastic) or RTI.
I was definitely not being a smartass in my reply, just that more info is better. Have a nice day :-)

The problem is the strength of the IR blast and it's inability to penetrate the perfectly fine lens cover. Maybe one of the two bulbs is out, but either way this thing looks like a repair is needed.

Okay smart A_ _ , if that's the case what's the fix? A new battery? Let's get something straight, everyone here is trying to help solve your problem. No one has been a smart ass, or even gotten attitude with you... and now you want to call someone here a smart-ass? He simply said that it would have helped if you had told us the remote has been sitting for a year... Call RTI and ask them for a new IR window.

Call RTI and ask them for a new IR window. I disagree with you - don't think there was anything "helpful" about the post I was answering other than to make comparisons to people who leave out helpful information. I knew that the symptoms of remotes that are left around are not consistent with my problem, and that I have found out from RTI that there were several bad batches of T2+ that exhibited the same problem. Also, if you understood the basis of my post I was not being confrontational by calling him a smart ass, only using it as a sarcastic mention.

bob Just replaced the IR window with another demo remote that works fine - still the same issue. Appreciate the input, defective unit.
