I'm making an effort to have our techs spend less time on site and give us the ability to update clients remotes without having to make a trip out to the jobsite.

Currently I can update K4's and RK-3's over the VPN with no problem. I just VPN into the client's router and give theatertouch the ip address of each device.

This does not work for T2C or RP6 (no ethernet port)... and even having the RP6 hooked up to an active usb port renders it unusable by the remotes.

So, I started researching USB over ethernet, and came across several products that claim to be able to support USB devices over the network such as:
[Link: everythingusb.com]

I am wondering if anyone has tried updating RTI devices over a USB -> Ethernet adapter? Are RTI devices USB 1.0?

Thanks,

I have done the same thing with VPN hosted on a XP Pro machine. I am working on getting a openvpn SSL connection to test.

I think they are 2.0 because if I connect to my hub they sometimes warn me... "this device.... " blah blah blah.

There was a keyspan piece that you would turn on and off across the net. I was thinking of hooking that to my rp-6s. But it would be easier to have the customer plug in a remote.

(I think you linked to the same one I was reading about a few months back.)

It sure would be nice if everything could be on the network or at least an RTI network (processors, keypads, charger bases...). Just the idea of plugging in at one location to download to all devices when implementing would be great not to mention the remote location programming advantages.

Another cool feature that would really benefit us all would be the ability to generate an executable file so that you could email the change and the customer could (if they wanted or felt comfortable) download it themselves with out the software.

Pronto had/has this feature and their docks were/are configured with USB ports so it is not a stretch.

Oh well, just another wouldn't it be cool if RTI..... thread hijack.

- I'm willing to say this would be in my "top 3" wishes for the new sofware! You pegged that one.

The separate freely available TheaterTouch software that clients can use just to send .RTI files to their remotes is a great start. Unfortunately none of my clients are going to be climbing into their rack to update the rp6. If we ever get our XP8's perhaps this will be a good solution soon, as all they'll need to do is plug in the remotes and press send, the rest of the gear can be updated remotely by us.

Here is another question... If I were to put an XP box in the rack, is there a safe way to turn the usb ports of that computer on and off? I want to be able to leave the RP6 plugged in, so I can update it remotely, but currently when you plug it in to USB it stops sending commands from the remotes.
One idea is to have an ethernet enabled power strip. plug the RP6 into a usb hub and usb hub to computer. By switching power on the usb hub on/off , you might be able to simulate plugging and unplugging the usb from the xp computer. I haven't tried this yet myself.

Anyone else have ideas or tricks to making this happen? Has anyone actually looked at what data is sent when you upload a remote?

a simple idea:

plug a USB cable into the RP-6 and leave the other end near the PC for the customer to connect to do an update:

go over the procedure with him and be sure he knows to disconnect it when done

We just did this. There is a media center that we can remote too. There is a USB cable taped to it.

What pieces did you do this with? Also, did you install TT on the media center to get this done?

(Windows) Media Center is in the rack just below the RP6.
There is a USB cable coming from the Media Center to the RP6.
The USB is taped to the side of the RP6 and not connected.
The media center has RDP enabled.
The Verizon Fios Router is port forwarding 3389 to the media center.
Other programmer (Read BOSS) wanted to do this.
I just opened the right ports in the router and made sure RDP would work.

"I am instituting policy on this one" The he decided he wanted to do the above. Seemed like a good idea. But at this time the Media center has all the ADA software on it so we can fix / tweak the whole house audio video rack. It just seemed like a good idea.

Now if I can figure out a way to activate and deactivate the USB ports... Like just shut the one off that goes to the RP-6. Enable it when I do a download... its an idea. I just need to figure out how to actually do it...

I'm not aware of a version that is strictly for allowing downloads to remotes and RP-1/RP-6.
