Trouble is, there are no standalone VCRs available. You'll have to get a combo or a used one.

I have one if your interested new in the box (Sony) if your interested.

PS - most of these other ones respond with a play command (turn on that is).
A play + power will shut it off easily every time.

JVC is pretty good about codes for VCRs. Mitsubishi's have discretes but not the longest service live.

There was a change on Sony VCRs a little while back.. that starburst at the bottom rather then the normal codes... and something with power ON I think. Been a while as we usually convince people to ditch the VCRs. Blow it up on a 100" DLP screen and they want it gone.

Mits, JVC and Sony have been the best for discretes that I have dealt with. And like vbova27 with the sony, we've got a few new in box mits super-vhs machines available.

David,

I recently used a JVC combo DVD-VCR on a job to serve as the VCR and I was able to find working power discretes for it (not the usual codes). I posted them recently in the discrete code forum.

No more VCRs manufactured without digital tuners... and who would pay for something like this???
