Today I tried to program my first K4. I tried to put the Escient controls in but couldnt get anything but a black screen. I set the IP address but didnt connect the composite video (since its a retro and no coax there).

Give your Escient a name, then put in an Internet explorer page in the touchpanel. Then use this address...[Link: fireball] where fireball is replaced by the name of you server...

Thanks. I just tried to use the IP address like when connecting to the Escient from a laptop.

BTW, do know where I could get the RS-232 codes for the Escient?

Are you trying to use the video input with button overlay or are you trying to do the whole thing IP?

I have used the IP version (fireball/rti) and the IR control. I have not used RS232 except with the Niles ICS system.

Is there any real world advantages to using the RS232? Yes, it is a more reliable connection.... but is there any features that can be accessed with RS232 (1 way) that cannot be done with IR?

WIth the fireball/rti interface... I have several issues. One is the fact (as discussed elsewhere) that if you open the interface, then close it, then open it (from an RTI touchpanel) it can freeze the web server.

The other one:

Sometimes if the fireball is playing for a while, and the touchpanel is on the NOW PLAYING screen, sometimes I get an error displayed. Some sort of "Function Call in line XXX error" (something like that). I think it is an error that occurs when the fireball changes tracks while on the NOW PLAYING screen... but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyone else seen this issue?

Did you find the response times better? For example, I see sometime when the control commands are delayed. (Curser down pushed 3 times in a row. It executes the 1st command, pauses, and then continues with the other 2 commands.).
I'll let you know tomorrow..

I believe the 232 controls allow you to do direct access to albums, and to movies if you have a 777 connected. Thats the main reason I want to try it. Ive got a customer with a 777 that has a couple concert movies they love to play during parties but they hate the dead air time of them having to search through the guide
