I was asked by a customer to integrate an IPOD dock into an existing ZON98 system....
I am also adding an RP6 for control using RTI remotes

IPOD DOCKS
IW3 vs IW4

with the IW4
Is there enough commands that justify the RS232 control, or do I just need IR of the IW3

If I go with the IW4
Can I fire IR from the ZON into the RP-6 to trigger the IPOD.RS232 commands in the RP6
or would I just fire IR from the ZON into the RP6 for pass through control of what basic control the ZON would use

I Feel like im leaving something out....

Did I mention it has discretes??

Glack, has that piece been reliable.

We've used lots of the Home Dock Deluxe (not pro).... and have had pretty good success, but certainly a few failures.

We use the IW3/FS3 all the time. The IR codes are pretty rock solid Discrete ON/OFF and all the basic commands that you could need. I've never seen a need for 232.

IF they have made it possible for the 4 series to do two way communication via the 232, then I might put that in for future XP8/wifi/zigbee goodies.

I agree with this 100%. We almost always use the IW3 with the exception of when we are using a control system that can take in metadata and display it on its own. IIRC the retail upgrade price from an IW3 to IW4 is $200, so if you plan on an XP-8 upgrade in the future I would use the IW4.

If only the iport would have a video out like the DLO units to put an OSD onto a K4 or if DLO would come out with an inwall version it would be so much easier.

Sonance was showing a video output from the iPorts at CEDIA.
I ran out of time, so I didn't look too closely at it.

They do have a video out but only for videos stored in an ipod with video capability, unfortunatly not a metadata OSD like the DLO units.

We just got in our first one and I havent had time nor an ipod to test it with. I was going to add it to our showroom system.

As far as I know, the IW/FS units have always had a video output, but not a GUI.

Sonance has told me on several occasion's that they are "working on a GUI"... but like most things that manufactures tell me, I'm not holding my breath.
