Is there a way to send RS232 commands via IP?

Since we're in an RTI forum, is this coming out of an RP-6? And I'll assume you don't have a wire from that point to the controlled device. You can create a serial tunnel with two Lantronix UDS-1100 units. They basically are a box with a serial port and a network port and one takes the serial string in and sends it to the other via ip and the other spits out the serial string to your controlled device. The UDS-1100 units usually cost about $130 each.

Yes an RP6, I can use a CAT5 to Serial but I wanted to eliminate the wiring there and use the cat5 for something else. It is pre existing wiring and I only have 1 cat5 and need 1 for ethernet.

You only need 4 conductors for 568A or B.

You can run Ethernet and 2 serial feeds (or IR) on the same pull.

Yes, but then it wouldn't be called RS232, it would be call ascii text. RS232 is NOT a protocol, like TCP/IP, but it is a physical interface like 568A. The RS232 interface comes in several different flavours such as DB9 or DB25 and with an original distance limitation of 25ft.
Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence.
