I think the question should be, is it common, or normal,
or a bad receiver, that locks up after being on for only
a couple of days.
Agreed. Regardless of if the unit locks up or not with prolong use, I want it to power down. Saves energy, it’s recommended for equipment longevity and it’s the right thing to do. The issue is solved now, all is good.
And be sure you've got a surge protector on it for at
least a week before asking.

Actually, I would have already ordered a replacement from
DirecTV. I've never seen any satellite receiver do this,
starting with the first models of RCAs that came out in
the nineties and completing with all present "brother"
models of DirecTV receivers. Have you ever seen a model
do this? Have you seen others of this model that ALWAYS
turn off after a couple of days?
Occasionally a H20. We did a commercial job where they wanted the video up ASAP for the grand opening. The control system was not up yet so for 2 days we left the H20s on. We had a lock up on a one unit.
If this is a good receiver, it will always turn off the
same number of hours after its last use because that will
be programmed into it. "If it's random, it's wrong" would
be a pretty good motto for bizarre equipment behavior.
