If this is against forum rules, let me know and it's gone.

I need your help. A friend called and asked me to come work for his company as a programmer. They are new to the large scale systems and he asked me what I needed to come work there. I really want to give a fair reply but I don't want to sell my self short.

I have been programming RTI remotes for about 4 years now. I started out doing T2+ and have moved up to my latest which has 1-K4, 3-T3, 4-T1, 2-U1, 2-RP-6, and 1-RP-1 controlling 3 separate racks of equipment via both IR and RS-232.

Does anyone, can any, will anyone tell me what fair compensation would be for someone in my situation?

Programming RTI remotes is only a very small part of what it takes to be valuable in this business. You can do it piece work, which be tough.

Prices for this are all over this forum...

management?Project, yes. Crew - On some of the bigger jobs
old work abilities?Yes

networking?Yes

Before I programmed I would handle 6 to 10 jobs at a time. Granted some of these were jobs that could be prewired in one trip and trimmed out the next. But there were also some that required weekly meetings with customers and builders and took almost a full year to complete.

I'm don't want to say I'm the best, I know that is not the case. But I think I can handle myself in most situations.

If it's an offer you can't refuse, why are you asking our opinion?
Also, if you need to ask people who don't know your skill set, well...

Ask yourself, how much am I being paid now, how much are they going to pay me, who other then the owner makes the most money, can you see yourself in that position, is it viable for you to be in that position, etc...

Take what you make now... at what ever percentage or subtract it based on the amount of work you are expected to do. Then pose it to them. If they "clench there teeth", your in the right ball park. If they just say "no"... walk. If they go "SURE!" Well then you will need to renegotiate in a few months to a year.
