They are probably not essential, but they would be if you are really fussy about your pictures. They are essential (I think) if you spent a lot of money in creating a home theatre. What's another $35 gonna hurt? It's like spending all that money getting the best equipment and use the free cables that comes with the components.

It does help you tune your home theatre, if you are not sure how, especially the picture. I never really knew how to use the test pattern to tune the color of my system until I got it.

I borrowed a copy of Video Essentials from a friend when setting up my home theatre. You'd be surprised what a difference you get in picture quality compared to the TV's default settings. It also helps with the audio setup especially if your receiver's test pattern is too short. Even though I can always borrow it, I still may buy my own copy just to have it.

As the proud owner of a THX system with separates, I can say that using the included patch cables is a far better move than not using Video Essentials.

I challenge anyone to a blind listening test to prove that expensive cables sound better. Sure they look cool, and may even have better connectors for reliability and corrosion resistance, but assuming everythings in fully working order, you will not hear a PROVABLE difference.

On the other hand, I highly recommend renting video essentials from a local shop or www.netflix.com. You probably don't need to own it, but a properly setup home theater makes all the difference in the world. Take the $30 you saved by renting instead of buying, and buy the Radio Shack SPL meter. With poor setup you can make a $15k system seem like a $500 system.

I imagine that the quality of the patch cablres that come with a THX system far exceed those boxed with less expensive separates - I have to disagree ,cable quality makes a difference, certainly as far as video cables go - the differnce I found between a bog standard component cable and a decent ($10) one was very noticable.

I agree with Marco...You may not hear so much difference with the audio cables, but with the video cables, you can really see it.
