What is the difference between dolby digital ready and dolby digital decoder? Will a receiver that is DTS ready play from a DVD player that is "DTS compatable"??

Also, does the following receiver JVC DS-TP120 have a decoder built in? I'm SO confused!

Any help would be great!

Some DVD players have a DD decoder built in and have 6 analog outputs for each front speaker and for both rear speakers and one for the sub.
A DD ready reciever does not have a DD decoder built in but has 6 analog inputs that you would run from the DVD player that has a built in DD decoder in it. This is a way of if you cannot afford a reciever with DD but you know you will want it later on, but you have to get a DVD player with a DD decoder built in. As for the JVC DS-TP120 reciever if it doesn't have a optical or coaxial digital input on the back then I would say it doesn't have a decoder built in, also it should say Dolby Digital on the from somewhere.

A "DTS Compatible" DVD player usually means it has the ability to pass a DTS bitstream which you would plug into a DTS decoder that is built into a receiver or processor. The DVD player itself does not necessarily have a DTS decoder built into it. I've personally never seen a DVD player with a DTS decoder built into it, but maybe they exist.

Carlos,

The DS-TP120 system you are refering to does not include a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder in it. It has, as mentioned above, a 5.1 or 6 channel input that you would either plug a DVD player with a decoder into or a separate stand alone decoder.

Fairly decent package, includes a powered sub.
