I'll soon find myself with multiple svideo sources, and only 1 input on the TV. I know switchers exist.... but who wants to get up off the couch to press a button? Anyone know of an "autosensing" switcher that will autodetect which source is sending a signal, and display it?

I hear tell of a Sima product called the SVS-4, which is auto sensing and IR remote controllable.

There are a few cheaper remote-controlled switchers, but I think for the money Sima is your best bet. You may want to enter this month's contest on this site, we're giving one away.

Look here for the Sima. Not the cheapest prices, but a good description. I bought mine from H&R Audio/Video mailorder for about $139.

Couple questions:

Can the SVS-4 be controlled by the RS-1994' say "plug & power" or other device key?

Does anyone know if there is another version of this with just video switching?

Can the audio switching be by-passed?

The Sima comes with it's own IR remote. So far I have not found any preprogrammed codes for it in any universal remote. It was VERY easy to teach it's code to both my Pronto and my Cinema7. It's autosensing is so good that it doesn't even need to be controlled. It even powers down when no video signal is sensed.

You can simply not use the audio switching if you don't need it. I let my SIMA switch my video sources, but run the audio thru my A/V receiver to decode the stereo, prologic, or Digital 5.1.

Sima does sell a video-only switch but I have no personal experience with it. Check for it at

As I understand it, the RCA s-video switcher is programable. In other words you don't have to program your remote, you program the switcher. The switcher will learn the ir signals of your remote. So lets say you teach the unit what signal your remote transmits in order to switch to the DVD input on your reciever, it will respond to that signal also and switch to whatever input you have DVD on. So IMHO, this would be ideal. The sima is auto sensing, but I don't know what it would do if you had more than one source on at a time. I've read two reviews (one in home theater magazine) that gave the RCA unit rave reviews. They said it was very transparent. It doesn't not degrade your video signal very much if at all. If it does, its virtually unnoticable. I'd get the RCA. It's only $100 list and available at Good Guys. If you live in California, Fry's has it for $80.
