What is the best place to put a subwoofer. I tried it behind the tv but was concerned it would vibrate my componets too much. I tried placing it behind the couch below my rear speakers but the sounds from it became distracting. I have heard placing it in a corner or at least next to a wall is the best. I have the subwoofer now across the room and to the far side of where the tv is. Do I just keep experimenting till I find where the sound seems to blend the best with the other speakers.

Best placement can depend on the room. The closer to a wall you are the more bass you will get. I would suggest the following: Center the sub, or just to the side of center and out from the wall a foot or 2. If using just one sub, placement anywhere around the front channels usually will work fine. Don't place it near the rear channels. They are effects driven. The sub should blend with your main L&R channels as if it were part of them. Hope this helps. Good Luck

If you walk around the room you will notice the sub sounds different in different areas of the room. One method for lacating a sub is to put it where you normaly listen to your system at and the walk around the room to see where it sounds best when you find the spot put the sub there. This is the easiest and fastest way to get close to the optimal position, then it can be fine tuned from there.

I would agree with both of you. The sub sounds the best toward the front of the room and after trying three different locations I have settled on the right place. I would tend to believe alot depends on room size, speaker output, decor or the room, height of ceiling, etc. so there would be no particular manufacture designed location. Thanks.

My subwoofer came with 2" wood feet, and the speaker aiming down onto the carpet. The carpet in my new house is rather thick, and was serioulsy muffling it. I had to build a simple stand to hold my newly aquired SAT receiver along with the VCR, AMP, and TV in the bedroom. There was room below for the woofer, so I put some wood cleats on the inside of the stand to rest the woofer on and raise it to about 4" off the floor.

Four inches, but still aiming straight down, and the sound improved greatly. Just for fun, I propped the front edge up a bit to aim the woofer towards the front about 5 degrees off horizontal. Suddenly the bass tones filled the room. While still shaking the floor when required, to overall QUALITY improvement in the bass range was 1000%.

Try it. You might like it.
