Can a progressive scan DVD player work properly on a 16x9 RPTV that is not designed specifically for progressive scan?, in anamorphic mode ?

Martin, A ps-dvd player outputs what is called a 480p image... a true digital image according to ATSC standards... a 16x9 image is not necessarily a digital picture... if your television set is not "digital ready" or "digital upgradeable" then a ps-dvd player will not help. save your money or get yourself a better standard dvd player..

Thanks John, My question was not detailed enough. I have the Sony DVP 7700 and Toshiba 40F80 RPTV. It is not digital ready. I was trying to find out if the progressive scan DVD players would function normally on my tv. This would allow me to buy one now, sell my Sony while still new, and be ready for the future. (Hopefully a Sony projector)

Actually the TV does not even have to be digital ready. All it needs is progressive scan or 480p or 31.5 KHZ scan rate input signal capability. (It does need the same jacks to match the player, usually component video, occasionally RGB.) Check the TV instructions if you are not sure. Note that S-video is for interlaced video only. Hi Martin
If your TV has component video inputs you will be fine, all the DVDs with progressive scan component outputs also have standard interlaced component outputs also, as well as, s-vid and composite
