Where's the bass?? What is going on. I have used multiple components all with the same result. Very little bottom end.. I have resorted to setting up a listening mode for DVD/SACD audio only. In this mode I have to peg the sub output gain at +12db... This only provides moderate bass. All the high channels sound great. Please advise..

This is the hardware:

B&K AVR507
Denon DVD-2910

Sony 777ES
Denon DVD-2200

All connected via 5channel analog out over 850i cables...

I don't get it..

your missing the .1 (sub interconnect) cable in the 5.1 setup, and if you post at 10:12 pm on a friday nite, you will most likely not get an answer until a reasonable hour on sat morning.

good luck

C'mon... the sub is connected. All channels are active. The sub just operates -10db relative to the other signals.

You have to do bass management. Take a look at your manual for the DVD player.

Yep, I just figured out (from the guys accross the pond) that the two Denon units in question are horrible when used as SACD players. Off to get a Sony with bass management.

LMAO!!! you do realize that -10db is HALF the output of the rest of the channels and would explain why you have such poor bass output, but have fun with the new Sony, just set it up correctly, and you should be fine.

When using SACD as a source in some players it follows the 5.1 spec and sends lfe out at -10db. Guess what, the SACD format does not follow the same scheme as 5.1 movies. It all makes sense now because I had to jack the sub gain up to about +12db for semi normal bass levels.

This is really old news, and shouldn't be this much of an issue on those 2 units. Bass management has been an issue on every high-rez audio player. It was an extra huge issue to people who bought the 2900 (and basically any universal player before that), but it was altered for the subsequent units with better bass management. Specifically, for the 2200, 2910 and 3910. The 2900 and 3910 are excellent performers for the money, but the 2900 requires some insane tweaking if your processor doesn't have level adjustments on the analog inputs.

The standard tweak is to use the receiver/prepro for movies with the digital output since you have to use the 2900's DAC for the high-rez anyway. Then you can set the 2900 for the bass issue without worrying about the levels for movies.
