I want to put a doorbell in my car, (just for the quirk of it), under the hood. Just a plain old "trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrieng" dome doorbell. Problem is voltage. I need one to work off the car battery, 12VDC. That will be the simplest and easiest. Anybody know where I can find 12VDC doorbells? Any other suggestions? I can just use a 3/6/9V bell that uses A/AA batteries, but the batteries might shake out of position in the car.

I'd probably go with a battery version and modify it so the batteries don't shift around. Duct tape and wadded paper, perhaps. Bigger problem might be making sure it doesn't melt from the engine heat.
Doorbell in a car?? So you can be sitting there in the car and push a button to get a doorbell sound? That's...different.

Dewald, standard doorbell voltage is 16v AC. I'd bet that 12v DC would run one just fine.

Do you plan on driving your car on Bike paths with this Bell ?
Some of those darkened windowed Limos I have seen on the road could use a door bell.

Well, he asked about the old-fashioned electromagnetic gong, which has a contact on the armature that opens the circuit every time the clapper strikes the gong, so it should work equally well on AC or DC.
I once wired a normally-closed relay contact in series with its coil, just to see if it would work, and it functioned as a buzzer just fine.

I love it. This guy did some research, found this site, and this is his first post.
I am only halfway being sarcastic -- I really love it!
Who the hell else would have a clue whether you could put a bell in a car? Go to some car site and they would chase you outta Dodge with tire irons!

Install a crestron control system in the dashboard. Use the contact closure input to trigger a wav file playback on the car stereo or relay output to a horn. then you can use a $2 dooorbell switch from home depot to close the circuit. as an added bonus you can tie lighting scenes to the touchpanel installed in your steering wheel.
