In order to put my amplifier rack in another room, I will need to run my component video input cables about 50 feet in overall length. Will this seriously degrade the input/picture quality?

If the connectors are done well, 50 feet is no prob. I've succesfully run component twice as long as you're planning with no problems. question: why is dvi not possible?

good luck!

Don't think that I can use DVI because the rear projection TV doesn't have DVI inputs, I don't think the receiver has them either. Sounds like a lot of adapters, but I am not familiar with this DVI setup.

Would it be worth the trouble?

Thanks
Bill M.

Nah, without dvi on either unit you're stuck with component. 50' should be no problem.

abmarsh,

Recently purchased and installed a 45' component video cable.

I did an A-B comparison after receiving the cable, before doing the permanent install..

Setup A: Sharp XV-Z12000, 6' HDMI to DVI cable, DirecTV HD Tivo
Setup B: Sharp XV-Z12000, 45' Belden 7710A w Canare Connectors (Component Video Cable), DirecTV HD Tivo

I did the comparison watching a Jay Leno HD broadcast. Projector was set up for 720p. Both setups were projected onto a 100" diagonal 16:9 Stewart Firehawk Screen.

Sitting at normal viewing distance, I could not tell a difference. If I got within a couple feet of the screen, I think I detected a little less sharpness in the component video cable... but I'm not absolutely sure. After having done the test, I'm glad I didn't spend money on digital cabling. I read too many horror stories about digital cables when they get into this length. (All kinds of stories about sparklies!)

Go with a good component cable, and I believe you'll be very happy with the results.
