Well, I am new here and the wife and just finished 2 bottles of wine and watching Contact again for the first time in a couple years and I have to vote for SVS after that. IF you are looking for bang for the buck, the SVS rocks!!! My 20-39 PCi plus is simply the best all-round sub I have ever heard in my house. It WILL rattle all undesireable knick-nacks off the shelves and scare the send the wifes cat into hiding for at least 12 hours. Thats enough for me.

BTW this is my third sub in this HT setup, I origanally had a mid-level Velodyne, which was OK at best. Then a sunfire that I may be still paying for on the credit card, but then resold on ebay for almost what I paid for the SVS. The Sunfore goes low, but IMO is not very accurate and not as musical as the SVS and way too expensive.

SVS Rocks, IF you can get the wife to deal with a large carpeted tube. But, if you can't, you don't deserve a sub this good!!!
Crappy remote, HTPC w/meedio&sagetv, Yam RX-V1400 rec, digi cable, 32" Pana SDTV + 22" CRT, polk audio "custom hybrid" 7.1 loudspeaker setup.

What's the specs on the Krell? For 25 grand it
better be able to chat with elephants 5 miles
away or else the SV subs will put it to shame.

I think the DD-18 is a Velodyne. Perhaps he meant
he's driving it with Krell amps.

Sorry, I just came back from Australia on a businness trip and noticed the mistake I had made on my thread. At first I was concentrating in buying 2 used Velodyne DD-18 with a Krell stereo amp which I went to check them out and they sounded outstanding, but I ended up with 2 Sunfire super Junior which are just as good.

The Wilson Audio Specialties XS subwoofer is eight feet tall and weighs over 700 pounds retails for $18,200 in standard finish without a crossover or power amplifier (Wilson will supply a crossover for an additional $4000).

It's so funny to see these other "ultimate" subs now that SV exists. 5 digit price tags, what a waste.

I have an 18 inch professional JBL driver in a 7 cubic ft home made enclosure. Will give peaks up to about 125 dB dwon into the upper 20 cps range. The driver is about $500 ish and the box costs what you want to put into it. Figure $150 plus whatever finish you want to do. Veneer works nice. Suggest at least 1 inch high density particle board with 2x2 hardwood inner frame and bracing. Ported with a 6 inch diameter PVC pipe. Will take close to 1KW peaks and 200 watt steady state. Watch the windows though.
I use just my 15 inch jbls with horns for most of the time thuogh. Plenty of output down into the upper 30 cps range and the compression driver horns have excellent clarity. If you want to shake the room though, the 18 is the answer.

I have a single sub in a 7 1/2 cu ft enclosure. An 18 inch JBL pro driver. Real good from about 24 to 40 cps (Jbl uses it to 500 cps in studio monitors, so believe me it is not a boom box speaker). Not just thump but true tones. Will give steady output in the 120 to 130 db range with a decent bridged 250 watt amp. In reality, 100 watts will do nicely. Initially I got it for the stereo but the 15" jbls down to 36 cps cover all but some really big pipe organ and the extra crossover does more harm than gained by the sub. For TV like the harrier in True Lies, it is awsome.
If you want to do it yourself, a 6 to 8 cu ft enclosure using 1" to 1.25" thick high density particle board and 2x2 hardwood inner frame and bracing is not too expensive to build and the driver costs aroud $5 to $6 hundred. For a port, a length of 6 inch schedule 40 pvc works well. If you need more length for the duct, use an elbow on the duct. For finish, I used walnut veneer, but even flat black paint then cover with some black knit material for a budget . Figure about $800 all told for a speaker selling for a few grand.
Actually I use a pair of 6 cu ft jbl home mede boxes with compression drivers and 15 inch bass drivers for side channels and rarely bother with the sub. IFyou are using the tiny satellites, this might be too much of a sub though.
