Hi,

Can anyone tell me whether the Yamaha z9 receiver/amp will output video from composite or s-video outputs if it only receives a video signal through its component input, i.e. will it "downgrade" the picture for those outputs?

The reason I am asking is that two of my DVD changers (at least) will either output video as composite/s-video OR component, but not both. So far I have chosen the former, so I can watch films both on my projector and TV, but if I could use the z-9 to downconvert I would get the best of both worlds!

I haven't seen the manual on the RX-z9, only the RXV2400 and it has a small diagram re the video paths for conversion. Sorry I can't give anything more definate.

Quote from the RX-Z9 receiver manual;

“This unit has three types of video jacks. The signals input through any type of VIDEO IN jack can be output through any of the VIDEO (MONITOR OUT) jacks (automatic video conversion).”

If you wish to check for yourself, the manual can be downloaded from here.

So it downgrades signals too? That's unusual, though honestly not unexpected in such a high-end product...

I'm an authorized Yamaha dealer and have installed many RX-Z9's. It only only up converts not downconverts. But is an amazing receiver.

there is little or no benefit of downconverting s to composite. I too am a factory authorized dealer. Quest is basically correct - it almost only upconverts.

So the quote from the manual is somewhat misleading?

I think you need to 'upgrade' to a 4x4matrix switcher.

The Yamaha Z9 has an outstanding Video scaler built in. Much better than any of the built in progressive chips inside DVD changers (Especially old ones that only do one or the other)

Go in S-Video to the Z9, you you then get Composite, S-Video and Componant output. ANd the componant can be ANY output resolution... 480i to 720p....

That, my friend, is the best of all three worlds.....

Agreed - Dont send progressive to the set - set component as interlaced

Go in S-Video to the Z9,

I would NOT recommend this one. Use component
