I have a Yamaha RX-V2095 home theater receiver. Because of the room placement in my home theater, the Velodyne VA-810-B sub is connected by a 25 foot RCA stereo audio cable. This goes to a Y cable adaptor to connect the two channel inputs on the sub to the single sub out on the RX-V2095.

This seems to work fine most of the time. However, at times when turning the system on, the sub powers on but does not provide any audio.

I find that when I plug and unplug the center connection to the Y cable. This causes the sub to hum. From then on, it works fine. The cables themselves seem fine and do not appear to be intermittent. There doesn't seem to be any issue with the mono sub output jack on the RX-V2095 either. It just seems that, at times, the sub needs a shot of hum to work. Any ideas as to what might be happening to cause this?

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi Jeffrey,

That hum you hear, I beleive (and I'm sure I'll be corrected) is the loss of ground when you unplug the signal cable.

I would also look at the Y-adapter, I've come across many bad ones. Don't know why, you'd think they'd be fairly easy to manufacture good ones.

And lastly, while I thought the auto-on feature of my sub was nifty, if there's no signal it would shut off, with an audible click, in the middle of something. Now this may have to do with cross-over points. If it's set too low (at sub or receiver) its not receiving any signal. So I just decided to leave it on.
I'm also assuming that you have set your Bass Management to small speakers all around. That way all low bass info is being sent to the sub. Below whatever you set the Xover frequency.

Hope some of this rambling helped.

Paul
