I'm very new to this. I have a kenwood Receiver VR-509 w/ remote RC-R0811. I have never used the remote except once when i first purchased the receiver (it worked then). Now it won't seem to work at all, it won't turn on the receiver or anything, but the lcd display works. I've tried alot of things including changing the RF band 1/2. Please Please Help me!!!

I don't sell Kenwood so I don't know the exact workings of the receiver and or remote. However in most supplied RF remotes they are supplied with dual modes...RF/IR. Now dom't get upset if thats not the case like I said I am shooting in the dark. Ok first I would try and check the address of both the remote and the receiver which sometimes isnt always easy but should easily be covered in the manual. If it does have IR capabilities give that a shot just to check operation. Have you gone to Kenwoods website and looked through their FAQs section to see if they can offer any ides?

Sorry, but that's the cause of 99% of remote problems.

I have done everything that you have listed there. I have even gone to kenwood's site and emailed them also. Nothing! It seemed to work for a split second the other day but that was it! I don't know if i would own another kenwood again!!

Bad reciever worse Remote.
Kenwood must have hired the same engineer asking for help with cables in the custom installers lounge. Your best bet wounld be to test your remote on another reciever. if it doesn't work. Try a Universal Remote. I'd sell the thing myself and buy a Pioneer. You'll be happy if you do.

jtc, yes an antenna is required..I assume this is Soveriegn line?? I know they require an antenna..It is not fancy, just a simple wire...Does remote allow a reset inside?? Check antenna issues and the reset and keep us posted...

i'm not sure if it is a soverign (spelling) unit or not! But i believe that the remote would still be able to work on the IR channel....and it doesn't. maybe the remote is just broken

I have a similar problem with my kenwood VR-509 receiver and remote.. If I leave the receiver off for a little bit.. 15 mins or so.. I can turn it on using the remote.. Then the remote will work for 15-20 minutes and then the receiver stops responding.. I again manually have to turn off the receiver for like 15 minutes and repeat this process.. Really annoying..

Another thing is I recently moved this receiver to another room and the problem showed up.. I had been using this receiver for over a year before this and never had an issue.. Also I ahve changed the batteries and reset both the receiver and the remote as per kenwood user guide instructions and still this problem persists.. Any help will be greatly be appreciated..Thanks.

I am not sure about the specification on your particular model but some receiver has a "Disable Remote Operation" Most of these are the ones with RS 232 control. Make sure that the switch in some cases or a setting in your setup does not have that selected.

I have the VR-509, as well (no, it's not the Sovereign line). The supplied RC-R0913 remote went dead some time ago... but it was pretty obvious (the LCD fails to display anything).

I do know, when it was working, for RF I definitely needed the RF antenna... no matter how close I was... it was simply required. The RC-R0913 didn't have RF vs. IR mode. Both were just "always on"... and whatever the receiver received was fine with it. I don't know for sure if the RC-R0811 is the same way... but I'd wager it is. So, jtcrom is correct... even without an antenna, the remote should still be able to control the receiver under IR. If it doesn't, either the remote is broken, or the IR receiving sensor is broken (which could be something as simple as the protective window being severely scratched).

Does anybody know of an after-market RF remote that would work with the 509? I could replace the RC-R0913... but, as a remote, it stunk anyway. I'd hate to have to buy another one.
