I'm getting some distortion from some cd's when I have my eq on....but some cd's sound great. My questions are:
1. should I use a eq at all.
2. could my cd player be bad.

A/R - Pioneer Elite VSX11
CD Changer - Technics MC-7
eq - Onkyo
Speakers Front - Sony SSMF315
Rear & Center - Sony SSCR290

The first thing you need to do is to get some new speakers!!!! Then next.. unplug your eq... i mean take it out.. all that it does is create fake sound from something that's there... Unless you had your room RTA'ed (real time analyzed) the eq will only give you more distortion and incorrect response from your cds.. Get some speakers from manufacturers that do nothing but make speakers ie. B&W, Klipsch, NHT, Boston Acoustics, Martin Logan.. etc... Any questions please feel free to email me!!

Basically, EQ's make up for deficiencies in a room's acoustic properties or an amplifier's/speaker's characteristics. The lower-end the equipment, the more likely an EQ will be of use to make things sound "better". So, if it's makeing it sound worse obviously it's not doing it's job.

Yes, equalization does have some high-end applications (say THX's re-EQ process).
