I have a current small Sony Pro-logic receiver with some good JBL speakers, and I'm going to upgrade to either a Denon or Onkyo mid level digital receiver. What I want to know, is it worth spending the extra 80% more for the receiver that is THX certified? Will I be able to tell that much difference in the sound quiality by going this extra mile? Thanks for the input!
Great forums!

I have found The THX setting to have much more depth and feeling compared to Dolby Dig. I would not trade it. If you can afford it you have to have it.

Having THX ReQ is not the same thing as being THX certified?

Some non certified receivers have the ReQ processing, which rolls off the high end so the soundtracks aren't as bright.

Being certified has to do with more processing, (decorelation, and bass management, and power handling per channel) as well as a certain build quality.

Having said all that, I agree with Mike B that it is worth the cost. Check out their site for the specs on certification. They probably list the products that have it.

Will you be able to hear a big difference? I would say that you're going to have to first deal with the move to full discrete surround first. That is a big difference.
But having viewed over 350 DVDs in my system, that yes there is an audible difference.

Take your favorite discs and go listen for yourself.

I also had a mid-range pro-logic system...
Just bought the Onkyo Integra DRT-7 $1000. Its THX certified and well worth it. Some notes though, if you are not able to upgrade your speakers, cables and interconnects as well...you might go with the lower models and spend some money in the other areas.

Hope this helps,

Slick

Slick,
I too just purcahsed the DTR-7. Great piece of work. What components does your system consist of?
You are the only other person I know that has bought the DTR-7.

Kevin
