I just installed an avp8000 and am using the Sub out instead of stripping signal off of the LF pre out. I notice though I am losing the signel except for ac3 programs. Should i also hook the lf in as well and will that create confusion when I do play an ac3 source?

Hey Mike,

All this should be covered under Bass Management in your user's manual. Generally,if you have set Bass Management to use "large" or "full range" speakers for front and rear, then only when playing AC-3 (read Dolby Digital), will the LFE signal be present, and be routed to the Sub.
But you should check your manual because not all processors handle the Sub out the same. My Parasound keeps the Sub active in all modes except Mono mode.

As to your hook-up question, (I'm assumimg LF means Left Front) depending on the above, you could configure "B.M." to small speakers and your Sub should run full time because all bass info below 80 Hz (again, generally speaking, some are set at 100 Hz, some you can set the level) and the LFE are being routed to it.

All crystal clear I bet.

Thanks Paul, The manual is really skimpy. Although speaker setup is clear cut they do not refer to the impacts of the choices. You must be correct so I will try it. I assume that the only hook up to the sub is the LFE.

Actually, it isn't Mike.

You could hook up the Sub inline with your fronts.
Set up for "large" fronts and small center and surrounds. In this way you would be able to adjust the low-pass filter that is on most powered Subs.

How you choose to set up depends on the frequency range and power handling of your speakers. The powered Sub allows your amps to work a little easier by not having to drive the low end.

I'm not familiar with the AVP-8000, who makes it?

Hope I've helped.

The avp8000 is the top Denon (now 8500). I have super Infinity class A audiophile speakers that have built in 150 watt subs but are a bit weak compared to my main sub(a 280 watt advent). I am using my old fronts (large Mirages) for surround and I have the adcom 7000 for the Amp. My center is a Parasound. I am seriously thinking about putting my sub back inline with the fronts as I got a lot more depth with music when it was that way before I had a sub out on the Pre.

Mike,

Very nice set-up. Denon seems to be a very popular name in this forum. Their AVR-3300 is quite a best seller.

I've been thinking about adding a second Sub inline with the fronts myself.

Good luck on the quest for the perfect sound,

Paul

Thanks for your help. I looked last night at the subwoofer monster cables but they are $44 and I need two sets because of the Length. They also seem to come out of the Pre sub out but split into three lines for LFE, right, left. I am a bit confused about why having the split l&R from the sub would make a difference since I have an LFE in on the Sub?

Yeah, the Y-adapter confuses me too. It's supposed to allow you to connect to a sub that has right and left inputs. But since it's a mono signal what's the significance of the dual connection?

I'll have to email Monster and see if they can explain that one.

let me know. It was not discribed on the monster box. It is a three way cable-lfe in, r and L. Upon closer inspection you were right. my book states use small speaker settings for THX as it routes all signal under 80hz to the sub if you do.

So Mike,

The answer to the question from a Mr. Carlos R. Lewison of Monster is thusly," Because some sub-woofers have a R & L input as do some receivers have a R & L sub-out." -This is the entire reply to my question. Kinda annoyed me and I think I'm going to reply to it

I guess the adapter is to y together the outputs from the reciever to the sub. Which is only a touch confusing because the photo of the interconnect at Crutchfield shows clearly shows it being used on the subwoofer which still makes no sense to me.
