Hi y'all,

A friend wants to buy her husband a new TV. Current budget-$2000. She wants a 32-35inch and has no desires beyond that. I've already informed her that 2 grand can buy her alot of TV. They are not Home Theater people, they have a very simple audio set-up.

So, at the higher end of that 2 G's, I was looking at the Sony Wega's.

Also to help consolidate remotes I was looking for a set whose remote would be able to control the VCR and the DVD player.

So let me have it my fellow fanatics and Happy Holidays and New Year

Well, I have the 32XBR250 and love it. You could always spring for the 36XBR250 and also get it professionally calibrated (ISF) for the best picture possible. I believe two g's will also get you into the smaller RPTV's.

There's other good 32-36" sets out there; but I'll leave those for others to mention.

The Wega is definitley an amazing tv however if your friend is willing to spend a little extra look at this months Home theater magazine where they review the new Hitachi high defintion ready 36" set.

Seasons Greetings!

Unfortunately these are not RP or DTV people. The DVD player is really a CD player that plays DVDs sometimes.

Saw the review of the Hitachi. But $3000 is a lttle more than a little extra. Perhaps not value-wise, but a budget's a budget.

Hey Cooltof,
You can't fault the SONY but consider one thing first, 16x9 or pan & scan. Your friends may not be techies' but I found that the switch to widescreen was relatively painless and gave me a great deal
more enjoyment for my money.I realiise the odds are they will be more comfortable with the old standard size screens but I thought it was worth a mention.

No sweat, Martin.

And I fault the Sony not. I have suggested the Wega to them on the sheer coolness factor of the set.

As to widescreen or P/S, that's not really an issue. Size is the issue. Above 40", it doesn't matter if the masking bars are top & bottom or the sides.

However, on a tube set, that they will be watching mostly broadcast and not pre-recorded material, I think a 4x3 ratio is best for them.

Thanks for the thoughts though and happy viewing,

Paul

Home theatre or not you should be looking at Digital and HD is not much of a premium. This TV will probably last 10 years or better and I think they would be upset to be out of date so soon with that kind of an investment. It will be standard so soon.
