I know, I know, you many times get what you pay for... I'm thinking about buying a low-cost Surround receiver for my brother. He has the wife and kids and other more pressing needs to spend his money on but I wanted to sort of get him a start with a decent system. I'm sure in a couple of years he may choose to replace/upgrade this item. Until you've owned (even a bad system) you can't fully appreciate the added bonus when watching a movie. I know they watch a lot of TV (VHS and now Direct TV). My problem is I didn't want the receiver to be sooo low end that he would have to upgrade it very soon. I was hoping to find one with S-Video switching capibility... He has a DSS system and it cost next to nothing now to pickup a DVD player. There, that would be two sources where it would be nice to have S-Video capability on the receiver. I guess I could just get him something like a Techniques DTS receiver (I tried out for one night...) It appeared to be a decent unit (but no S-Video). I'm trying to keep the receiver purchase in the $275-375 range. Of course I would hope that he would quickly add a DVD player and get an even better experience.
Any recommendations... I guess... low-cost with S-Video switching and low-cost without S-video switching but must have DTS.
thanks
Ken

...my fault...
When I mentioned DTS I meant to say Dolby Digital 5.1. If the unit had at least 75 watts per channel or more (all 5 channels, equal power)that would be great also. I just found a short review on the technics SADX930 reciever... they said not bad for that its price. Any thoughts.
thanks

Take a look at the JVC RX888V. The mass market retailers are selling it for about $500, so I bet you could find it for around $350-$400 range. I have the older non-DTS 884 model; I got it for about $330.

The 888 does Dolby Digital and DTS, has a nice on-screen configuration display, and does S-Video switching. I presently have my 884 running DVD, DishNetwork, and PlayStation - all in S-Video. One thing I like about it is that it remembers your settings for each input, like volume, surround settings, etc.

But whatever you do, if you want your sister-in-law to love you too, pick up a nice universal remotes like the Cinema7. With all that gear, the remotes multiply like bunnies. Heck, while you're at it, buy 2 - one for each of them!

hi.....Denon makes a low cost unit, either the a/v
97 or 88 i believe, or the new higher end Teac, i believe its # AGD9320...and thats built by H/K at their same hi-end plant i believe......pioneer also makes some newer models that are really in-expensive now,,,,fact is, most if not ALL of the dolby digital 5.1 receiver units have dropped significantly in price over their prior units.........and i have a/b'd the ultra units from sony,denon,adcom,yamaha,etc,etc,etc....and YOU would be hard pressed to hear the subtle differences between the ultra hi-end and the regular hi-end of the leading jap companies....now , when u are talking separates, as in separate 5 channel amps, + a separate a/v pre-amp or processor, thats a whole different ball game............anyway, good luck billy c

I for one have the Pioneer VSX-D608. Besides not being all that loud compared to the 100 watts is claims to be, and a minor pop when digital inputs cut on/off at layer changes, it's been great. Bought is at Best buy for 379.99

In the "new products" section of the December issue of Sound & Vision is a new product from Sensory Science called Go-Video DVD 3000. It is a DVD player and 5 channel amplifier. A VCR and satellite receiver can also be added. Cost is $499. Phone is 480-998-3400. No web site listed. I've often wondered why they never made a VCR/Amp combo. Wish they came out with this a long time ago.

and to finish that thought-

The winner was a Kenwood- VR 309, DD,DTS with s-video switching, 100watt/ch. They mention that this receiver is also part of a Home Theater in a box package with speakers that they rated a best buy.
