Where is your Home Theater room?

I've just bought a new house. There is a nice windowless room in the lower level that I'd planned on using as a home theater space. However, the House Inspector noted a "cavernous" unfinished space in the attic of the house. His comments were that with some finishing and an access stairway is could be a very large and useful space.

So I'm curious... Where in your house is your Home theater? What have you found to be the disadvantages of the space be it basement, attic, or main living level? If you could do it all over again in a new custom built house, where would you put the home theater?

Replies greatly appreciated,

Dave

David, Go with the lower level assuming it is the cellar or basement. Some of the sound proofing is already completed, ie; floor and walls. I have an almost perfect spot in my cellar, however lost it to a guest for the time being. Good luck in your new home.

Mine is in the basement as well, however that's mostly because it was the only choice. The room is far from ideal in shape and placement of objects (supporting posts, fireplace, etc.) but I've got a pretty good setup now. Sounds sweet, even with my limited budget. :-)

Basement here too. It's kind of a huge rec room with the home theater, pool table, wet bar, and computer. Not the best for acoustics, but I can do everything else while watching TV.

Hello All, and thanks in advance for any help.
I am building a home theatre in my basement. Its a huge rec-room in which I have a 16'x13' space where I would like to put my 62" rear-projection TV "in" the wall. (the back of this wall goes into the laundry room).

Is 16'x13' a good size area? Is it too square?

Also, is there a "lessons" learned FAQ on HT that could answer questions about design, equipment (filters, lights, etc) and racks, etc?

I would like to do this right the first time.

Thanks,

Jim
