Is it better to connect a DVD directly to the TV or run everthing through a Receiver that has Dolby digital decoder.

For sound? Through the amp of course. For video? Doesn't really matter, as long as you use the "best" system you have (Component -> SVideo -> Composite, in that order).

Some high-end audio enthusiasts proclaim that the more connections you have the more noise will get into your system. Thus you should connect the DVD directly to the TV.

I, however, agree with Daniel. I have never seen connecting a DVD to a Receiver to a TV to add any noticable noise.

Currently I have multiple composite sources, no S-Video and one component (DVD). So, the DVD player is connected direct to the TV (I have no choice there) but everything else goes through the receiver and I've seen no problems.

If you have a choice, please do go with SVideo as the recommended type of video connection. If you check the Avia test disc, Special test #4 and 5, you'll see why SVideo does a much better job. With the composite, you will notice the entire picture suffer from color bleeding (the picture is supposed to be purely black and white). The reason why you use SVideo is so that you can bypass the comb filter inside the tv!! Yup, all those retailers hyping about 3D Y-C comb filters doesn't mean crap unless you use an old VCR!!
As for noticeable difference when using a receiver for video switching... well depending upon which products that you currently have will determine whether there will be a recognizable difference. Anyone using a 30" tv will probably not notice any difference (unless you own a Loewe set!) But if you have a Runco DTV 1100, then degredation will definitely be noticeable.
Of course to ensure the most purest signal, route everything to the TV (but you have to remember which input goes to which source), but for most people, going all SVideo through the receiver is a much more efficient thing to do.

Use component input (as on DVD players) and you can even bypass the TV's color decoder. Assuming your TV has component inputs.
