Can I bridge my speaker outputs?

My receiver has all kinds of DSP modes, but the function I really wish I had is being able to send the same signal from the front speakers to the rear surround speakers as well. (To be used when playing CDs.) I can plug the rear speakers to the 'B' speaker outputs and set the reciver to A+B but then I would have to reconnect them when playing a DVD in order to get 5.1.

I was wondering if it would hurt my receiver or the speakers if I bridged the surround outputs to the 'B' speaker outputs. I tried an A/B switcher but suffered too much signal loss since it was working in reverse.

Thanks for any response.

Mike,

Why not use a speaker selector switch to accomplish this? Just reverse the way it is hooked up. Use the speaker outputs on the selector as your inputs and your input on the selector as your output! You may want to make some labels to go on the front of the selector switch, so you'll know which button to press. Then, you can "select" what mode you want and how the speakers are connected.

Steven:

I purchased one from Radio Shack and hooked the speakers to the 'amp in' and the two receiver outputs to the A and B speaker switches. Unfortunately, volume through the speakers is about half of what it is when the switch is hooked up correctly.

Mike,

This should NOT occur. All the switch does is close the circut to allow the input & output to be connected. Are you using a switch that is impedance matching? This may be the problem. Which Radio Shack model do you have (cat. #)?
