Looking for something easy to use for my Parents, who are technophobes. The simpler the better.

Pretty much any player from a major brand will be pretty good. Using 800.com as a reference, the Toshiba 2109 goes for $250. The Panasonic A120 for $280. Samsung 739 for $250. Sharp 600 for $300.

You could always go for an "Oritron" at $180.

I think a very important feature would be an easy to use remote control with
BACKLIGHTING,

so they could see the buttons easier in the dark.
just my two cents

Thanks, guys.

Is there any appreciable difference in construction quality, or image performance, on this level of player? IOW, in a price range, are they all pretty much the same, or is one head and shoulders above the rest?

Dan -

A an afterthought, it occurred to me that certian DVDs with "extra features" present problems on some players. The Matrix is one such DVD that comes to mind as being problematic for some players.

That gets me back to my original concern - is there any particular brand, or player, that has
"proven" itself by superior performance?

Rovert: Most "Matrix" problems are on players with older firmware. Warner used a newish format that wasn't 100% compatible with certain players. My oldish Sony S500D had no problems with it.

You'll find that almost all DVD players have a quirk or two. Just get *new* model from a reputable brand.

I second the Panasonic A120 recommendation from 800.com ... Simple to use, has worked flawlessly on well over a 100 DVD's, and it is inexpensive.
