Help!

I purchased a Denon 3802 a few weeks ago, and just got around to using the DTS sound. Whenever I am in DTS mode I hear what sounds to be a cross between rain drops and a cricket chirping. I have done some searches and have not found any reasons why this would be. It only happens in DTS, not DD 5.1. Any suggestions? I am at a loss with this one.

Thanks,
Don

What sort of DTS sources are you using?

Can you describe your problem in a bit more detail?

When does it happen? On all DVDs? When a disk is playing or not? Which DVD(s)? etc. etc. What is the other gear in your setup. How is it all connected?? Thanks.

OK, I'll do my best.

I have a Denon 3802, B&W speakers, Pioneer 434 (I think) DVD player. No fancy hookup, just the standered stuff all swiched through the Denon.

The problem happens when listening to a DTS DVD in DTS mode (any DTS DVD).

The sound goes away when I mute, and goes up and down when I increase or decrease the volume.

I do not get it when in DD.

Seems to be coming out of all channels.

I hope this is enough info. Please E-mail me at [email protected] if you wish to take this off the forum for discussion.

Thanks, Don

The chirping stopping on mute and varying with the volume control only means that it's not in the receiver. More clarity questions:

Does the chirping stay or stop:

when you pause the disc?

when you turn off the DVD power switch?

when you unplug the digital interconnect cable?
(Be sure to mute the receiver when plugging or unplugging ANY cable!)

when using analog left and right audio cables instead of a digital one? (I believe a DTS disc will output an analog audio signal)

This sounds similar to a problem that I had with a pioneer combo player a few years ago. Mine only did it when you played a LD for awile then the jitter sound got louder and louder. I don't realy know what the cause was. I did however have to take the unit back 3 times and threaten to return the unit before the dealer would correct the problem. I also had to wait there while the unit was playing for about 1.5 hours to get the tech to admit there was ever a problem with it.---Best of Luck!!---Dave

Larry,

Sorry for the delay, I have been side tracked.

"Does the chirping stay or stop:" Stops

"when you pause the disc?" Stops

"when you turn off the DVD power switch?" Stops

"when you unplug the digital interconnect cable?" The coax, stops

"when using analog left and right audio cables instead of a digital one?" Could not get this to work.

It's gotta be something gone wrong with the DVD player. I hope you don't have to go through the same thing as I did to get it fixed. If you could borrow another DVD player from someone you could find out for sure.---Best of Luck.--Dave

I am acually glad to hear that. I was thinking it was the AMP. I have a 3 year exchange on my DVD and can just take it back. Thanks for the help and I will keep you posted

Hey Hombre,

I think I have managed to replicate your problem.

I have a NAD T550 DVD and a Sherwood AMP.

I can play CD's or DVD's on the NAD
It sounds very nice

If I force the AMP to be in DTS mode then I get the rain sound.

It goes like Tsst pause 1 second Tsst pause etc etc

It sounds like your DVD's are defaulting to DD5.1 ( most of them do - you need to force the DVD audio to DTS )

Set your AMP to Auto-detect and you should be in business.

Cheers

Well guys thanks for all the help. I ended up taking it back to the store, and after answering 20 questions and having them hook it up... they exchanged it. The new one is great! Now if only I could decide on a center rear without buying a whole new speaker system I would be set.

DK, a speaker that matches your front center should suffice, especially if your rear L & R closely match your front L & R.
