I’ve been using a few cables from Kimber’s range for a while now. A lot depends on how much you are prepared to pay for a cable(!), I’ve only really used the more expensive cables in their line up and I’m very happy with the results...

At present I’m using 2 sets of their Illuminations D-60 digital interconnect (which retails for about £145 per 0.5 meter here in the UK), one for my Home Cinema set-up and one for my CD player and DAC. I initially purchased only one for the CD player, but after a quick test between my DVD player and Home Cinema amp, I was so impressed I had to buy another (ouch!). I’ve also used their OPT1 fibre optic cable (£40 / 0.5m), which is easily the best of about 3 optical cables I’ve heard. Depending on your budget, I’m sure you would be impressed with either of these.

The only analog interconnect I’ve tried is Silver Streak (£150 / 0.5m) which gives good results too. I use this cable to feed my (Hi-fi) amp the signal from the front (main) pre-outs on my Home cinema amp. To be honest, I’ve haven’t tried this cable outside the Home Cinema rig, preferring to use Deltec (DPA) Black Slink (£240 / 1m) for my CD and (hi-fi) amp duties. I would like to try some of the more expensive Kimber cables at some point though… just need to get the money together first! ;-)

Speaker cable: I’m using both Kimber 4TC (£20 / 1m) and 8TC (£40 / 1m) to bi-amp my front speakers and would have no hesitation in recommending either of the cables, they give really impressive results!

Overall, I haven’t heard a Kimber cable yet that hasn’t impressed me! The cables further down their range reportedly give good results for the their price as well. Importantly the cables seem to be consistent from system too.

hi phill, thanks for the info. One thing ive noticed with these cables is they recommend cutting off the plug from the source component eg CD and using theirs. you never mentioned if you had done this and i presume you haven't.

Is alot of money to spend but if its as good as everyone says then i guess its a sound investment as you'd never upgrade cables again.

Q. what is Deltec black slink and where is it advertised

cheers

Hi John, I suppose deciding to ditch your existing plugs really depends on their quality. I forgot to mention in the first post about their mains cables (Doh!). The quality of the mains supply was always something I overlooked and was even a little sceptical as to the difference it could make. The real bonus with all the Kimber cables is their ability to remove RFI (radio frequency interference) from your system. This is especially true of their mains cables and makes a HUGE difference to the sound of your system. All the background ‘hash’ is removed and the sound becomes much smoother and fluid while the bottom end gets deeper and more controlled.

I agree that cables are a sound (!) ;-) investment, after all if you can get everything sounding better, you might be able to save some money upgrading kit and put the money to better use buying DVDs and CDs. I’ve always thought one of the best things about buying new kit or cables is that you end up watching all your films or listening to all of your albums again!

I don’t know where you live, but here in the UK the sole distributor offers a 30 money day back guarantee and an upgrade scheme. Basically, if you upgrade within a year you get the full (!) Value of the cable back to offset against a new one! (The scheme is valid for part value for at least three years too) I believe they ship worldwide as well. Their web site is being overhauled so you would be better off asking them for a brochure (which give lots of tips on how best to set up your system as well) http://www.russandrews.com

Sadly Deltec (Precision Audio) are no more and alas their Black Slink cable is no longer available :-( Just for info though, it is of quad geometry type design using 16 copper cores, each one being sliver plated and terminated with WBT phonos. It gives as good results as any cable I’ve heard and was always highly recommended in the press. That said I’ve yet to put it up against an equivalent cable from the Kimber range, I guess they would be pretty equal though.

Hope you have fun upgrading your system.
Phil.

thanks phill, im in the uk and have the Russ Andrews catalogue. The reason i posted this question on here is the old saying that people selling things only print good comments about their products. I can only summise by the lack of response this thread has gotten that there are no bad things to say about Russ Andrews and his Kimber Products, and that cant be a bad thing.

Wish the prices were a bit lower but i bet if i tried the products i'd think they should be dearer.

Thanks for taking the time to champion Russ, heres hoping i get a chance to try them soon (bank manager allowing).

I'm off to have fun.
thanks
