Hi Steve-You are going to hear all about Denon, Yamaha, and Onkyo. Possibly even Sony as well. If you are in the 1000.00+ range then I would recommend audtioning Rotel along with the others, I think you will be amazed at how much better Rotel is than the others in the same price range.
Happy hunting

I have a Marantz SR-7000, and feel you can't beat the value ($800) and the remote (same as the RC 1200)
But everything depends on price range ...

Go with the new Marantz SR5200, 6200 and 7200 line!

Differences basically.

SR5200 6.1 Discreet Channels, new Prologic II, 85 watts, does not have SRS 360 Circle Surround Mode, Does not have Multi-room capability, remote is univ but not backlit.

SR6200 6.1 Discreet Channels, new Prologic II, 100 Watts I believe, Does have SRS Circle, no multi-room

SR7200 6.1 Discreet Channels, new Prologic II, 105 Watts, SRS 360 Circle Surround and Multi-Room Capability.

I went with the 5200 as I am only using it as a pre-amp to my adcom amps and it's astounding with both Music and HT! Much better than my Yamaha 5250 was as a pre-amp in the same system. If I had had the money I would have probably gone with the Onkyo 787 THX Cert Receiver. But at $500 bucks delivered from online store the 5200 is a pretty sweet deal.

I'm also looking for a good AV reciever but am lost in a maze of information. They all look good! ... but I want to avoid buying one and then finding out I overlooked something.

I'm definitely a rookie at this but want to start buidling a quality stereo / home theatre system. My budget for a reciever is in the $1,500 range (Canadian)(about $1,000 US).

I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-DS696. Any comments? Any comparible receivers? I want to make sure I get a really good remote as well. Any recomendations for where to purchase online?

Thanks!

I would definately look at the Rotel receiver line for that money. I don't think you will find a better buy than them. Their first reciver (RSX 965) competed favorably with the B&K AV202 (I beleive that is the model). So it competes in a much higher end range than say the Onkyo, Denon, Yammy, or Sony's of the world.
I owned the RSX 965 and loved it, it beat everything out there for the price....period!

One thing....audtion audtion audtion audition. Make sure that when you do you have them hook up the same speakers that you own or at the least similar speakers.

Most higher end brands do not sell online or their warranties are voided unless you buy from authorized dealers. Not too mention that auditioning in person than buying online is a slap in the face of the dealers. When I auditioned my reciever the dealer went through alot of work connecting and reconnecting the receivers and speakers and moving them all around.

Good luck and happy auditioning

Tony
