My recently purchased Harman Karden DVD 50 Player is connected to a Sony 42" plasma monitor via component video out (DVD Player, RCA plugs) to RGB/Component Video In (Plasma Display, VGA plug). With progressive scan enabled, the picture sometimes goes to black momentarily, generally for less than a second. When this happens, the message "480p 60Hz" appears at the top left of the screen. I've played several different DVDs, and they all have this problem to varying degrees. What is the cause? How can this be fixed? Please advise.

Pasted from the Harman Kardon FAQ.

Most HDTVs require you to select the “input type”. The usual choices are between “Y/Pr/Pb” and “R/G/B”. You must select “Y/Pr/Pb” to view the progressive scan video output correctly.

Just a guess. Hope thats it.--Dave

Thanks, but that's not it. I've tried both settings. Viewing in RGB mode provides no picture at all. Y/Pr/Pb produces a great picture, exept for the occasional flicker. I'm thinking it may be a problem with the DVD player's ability to detect and correct errors in the progressive data stream. Any thoughts?

The only progressive DVD machine I have used with with the Sony 42" is the Sony 9000es with no problems to report.

I seem to remember reading something about some people with progresive players having to change the "sync width" setting. (or something like that) I'll try to look for that when I get home tonight.

You also might try posting this over on the AVS forum. There is a dedicated forum for plasma displays over there. --Later--Dave.

See your dealer who sold you your Harman DVD 50. There is a soft upgrade that is done via a cdr and should correct your problems
