I have the Sony STR-DA333ES receiver and in the EQ settings you can set Bass, Mid and Treble Hz values.
Does anyone know what this actually does?
What I'm trying to do is set the bass cutoff since I've got all my speakers set to 'small'.
Is that what this does or is this something I can even control?
Thanks,Rob

I can't believe no one here knows the answer to this?!
I read through the entire manual last night - which, if you're familiar with Sony's extensive manuals, took all of about 5 minutes - and it didn't really explain what the purpose of setting those Hz values is.
Please . . . anyone, anyone . . .
Thanks again,
Rob

Generally, the frequency selected is the center point of any adjustments. When you set the speaker size to small the receiver tends to send most of low end to the sub-woofer. The two are not related.

Thanks Doug!
Then my next question is, does anyone know what the cutoff frequency is for the Sony STR-DA333ES receiver when you set the speakers to small? (I'm guessing it's the same on all the ES models, and possibly ALL of their receivers.)
Thanks again,
Rob

the low-cut F is set to 90 hz as standard but you can change it on 60,90,120 into the setup menu

Fabrizio, where 'exactly' do you change the setting?
I (and it sounds like Ignacio as well) can not find that setting anywhere.
Thanks,
Rob

Ignacio,
I found out from someone on another forum that the STR-DA333(and 555)ES model receivers do not have a user adjustable setting for the bass cut-off.
The same person was also pretty sure that the set value is 100Hz - so I set my sub to cut-off at about 110Hz.

If the Sony amp has a fixed subwoofer cutoff and you're feeding RCA line levels to the subwoofer, then it makes absolutely no difference what your sub cut-off is, as long as it's higher than what the Sony amp is. That's because your sub can't cut off frequencies that it isn't provided with. Whether the amp is 80hz, 90hz, 100hz -- just set your sub to max. :-) The cutoffs are only if you're using a "mixed" line out (all frequencies) or speaker-level in/outs.

According to my ES processor (which is adjustable), the default cross-over is 120Hz.

I have the 777ES. I don't know how the setup options compare with the 333ES and the 555ES, but with the 777 if you set the speakers to "small", the bass cutoff is automatically set at 80hz unless and until you adjust it.

On the 777ES, these settings are fully adjustable. When you press "soundfield" it brings up a few secondary menu choices (I am not at home so I am going on memory)--one of which is "speaker setup". When you choose speaker setup, one of the settings you can adjust is the xover for any speakers set to "small"--they are individually (fronts, center, surrounds) adjustable. Again, I don't know about the 333 or 555 but that is how I get to the xover settings on the 777. I also have the bass, mid, treble, etc under another secondary menu called "EQ Settings", and other adjustable settings under yet another secondary menu called "custom settings". Don't know if that info is of any use, but in case it is--you have it. Good luck.

I have the DB930; there is no adjustable setting for bass rollover or cutoff. The fine frequency adjustments provided in the bass, mid and treble ranges are basically just fine-tuning, like an equalizer with a lot of sliders. This is the word I got from Sony tech support last year. ... Mike
