Hi there

I have had no luck in "learning" the power off function of the Apple Mac remote (ie [Link: en.wikipedia.org]) on my Sony RM-AX4000 remote.

The "power off" function is acheived through holding down the "play/pause/on" button on the Apple remote for approx. 4-5 seconds.

Of course, the maximum signal the Sony remote will learn is only the standard length of the signal - not the length required for turning off the Mac.

I have tried various permuations of repeating the "play/pause/on" button as a macro function to replicate holding down the button, but have had no luck in turning the Mac off. Also fiddled with the "set the length of preset/learn" setting in the Remote AX software (not that the instructions give any idea as to exactly what this does).

Can anyone please offer any suggestions? I've searched the forums here and the wider internet, but can't find anything on this.

It is really frustrating not being able to turn the Mac off, as it is the only regular function that we require a second remote for for seven components.

Many thanks if you are able to help.

I guess the question is - is the Apple remote sending out "play" for 5 seconds and the computer is shutting down after it sees it for those 5 seconds, or does the Apple remote send out a NEW command after 5 seconds has elapsed?

Woohoo, a reply!

The answer to your question is I do not know - I've thought about this myself, but don't know how to find this out (considering it won't learn anything longer than the first part/initial signal).

Does anyone have an idea as to how I could find this out?

I'm really surprised that others haven't come across this same problem - perhaps I should be posting this in a more general forum, as it probably applies to many brands of remote?

I haven't tried power off, but i have noted that the directional key on the apple remote allows you to hold to scroll fast, which does not work on the ax4000. Have you noted this as well?

Technically this would apply to any remote.

First, some ways to check.

1) See what the remote is transmitting. I can see no functional reason to ever need to hold PLAY/PAUSE down, so technically the remote may only send a brief burst of PLAY/PAUSE, and after it's held for X seconds send an entirely new command. To test this, find some sort of digital camera - cell phone, still camera, video camera - and aim the remote at it as you push the button. You'll be able to see the IR LED flickering on the LCD screen while the remote is transmitting. Does it flicker for the entire duration?

2) If you can't do that, or if it flickers for the entire duration... Time how long you have to hold PLAY for before the system shuts down. Then, do the same thing but place your hand over the remote and block the IR transmitter for at least the first 4 seconds (or whatever) of holding the button. Either the system will shut down after just a second, telling you it's an entirely new code, or you'll have to wait another 4 seconds, which means it's reading that command for the full 5 seconds.

If you need to send the command for an entire 5 seconds for it to work, then there's no way to automate that in a macro with the Sony.
